If you’re confused by backlinks, you’re not alone.
It can tend to be a mystery to most of us. If you think about it though, it does make sense. Linking your website to other quality sites will increase your web visibility and hopefully improve your search engine ranking. If you’re still not convinced or are unsure how you go about setting up these links, just follow these simple tips and you won’t go far wrong.
I guess the most confusing aspect of link building for newer websites is in trying to establish precisely what a back link actually is. Essentially it’s a recommendation of your website or blog on another person’s website: if you prefer you can view it as a vote of confidence that tells other users this guy’s OK. Getting back links or linking to other sites won’t necessarily mean your business will get more website traffic: it can happen occasionally, but that’s not really the point. What link building does do is increase your search engine visibility and leads to more organic traffic when users search for your keywords.
The obvious concern many businesses might have with link building is the fear of linking to either bogus or poor quality sites – call it guilt by association if you’d prefer. It doesn’t have to be that way though. All that’s necessary is to make sure you only seek direct links from high quality websites that have some relevance to you or your business: there’s no point linking to top end jewellery site if you sell garden tools, well, none that’s immediately obvious at least.
How you go about your link building is up to you.
You might already know which sites you want to link to and have already decided how quickly you’re going to do it. If you aren’t so confident, you can always try the following:
- Blog marketing
- Social bookmarking
- Related websites
- Forums – if they allow it of course
- Reciprocal links
- RSS feed submissions
Blog marketing is possibly the hardest route to choose and undoubtedly requires the most effort, but the rewards are probably the greatest. Submitting your blogs for publication to good quality, trusted article directories will do your business no harm at all. Top-notch article directories are respected and have gravitas. Back links from these will not only increase your own web visibility, but also send more direct traffic your way.
