Online Spending Increasing By 16% Claims ONS – Is Your Business Making The Most Of This Opportunity?

How important a role does internet marketing play in the resurgence of the UK’s economy?

Is your business taking full advantage of the unprecedented growth offered by the internet? If the answer is no, then you could be missing out and lagging behind your competitors who have fully embraced the potential of the digital market place. How can you ensure your business remains competitive? Well, you’ll need the help and guidance of internet marketing experts like Search and More.

Why is internet marketing so important?

Well, it’s simply because more and more customers are choosing to make their purchases online. Consumers have embraced the digital boom, so it follows that any business that wishes to remain competitive must do likewise. How many customers are buying products and services online? Well, considerably more than you might have expected. According to the latest figures from the Office of National Statistics the amount spent by UK shoppers online increased dramatically in 2012: up by 16% per person from 2011.

The figures show that the average shopping spend was £1,175 compared to £1,017 the year before.

What makes this all-the-more-remarkable is that figure is more than double the average spend per head of other countries in the survey. It might surprise you but according to Ofcom’s research, shoppers in the UK trust online retailers more than shoppers in other countries. This same research also suggests that UK online shoppers have greater confidence in the security of the sites they buy from.

Ofcom’s research for online shopping was based on data from IMRG, the industry association for online retail sites. Its annual International Communications Market Report also indicates that UK consumers benefit from cheaper access to mobile phones, landline and broadband deals than customers in France, Germany, Italy, Spain and the US. The proportion of household income spent on communications deals in the UK was 2.3%, compared to 2.5% in the US and 3.4 per cent in Germany. According to James Thickett, Ofcom’s director of research this pricing structure may play some part in the UK’s online shopping figures, as home-based consumers are increasingly using mobiles and tablet devices to access the internet on the move:

“Consumers in the UK are benefiting from one of the world’s most price competitive marketplaces for communication services. Telecoms bills have been falling in real terms in the UK for the past ten years. However, consumers are not just benefiting from cheaper deals – they are also getting much more for less, as the quality and range of telecoms services has expanded hugely in that time,” he told the BBC.
