Just How Important Is Local Search For Your Business?

Ever wondered how important local search is?

Have you ever really considered what an improved local search ranking can do for your business profile? Well, here are 3 simple facts that might just focus the mind:

  • 1 in 3 searches carried out on Google are local searches.
  • 4 out of the 10 customers your business is trying to reach carry out at least 1 local search each day.
  • 70% of the customers you’re trying to reach will use a local search to find offline businesses.

Now if you were not convinced about the importance of local search before, then maybe those statistics might force a rethink. But the question remains, how do you improve your local search profile and make your online business more visible? Well, here are 10 top tips that might just help.

Ensure your location keyword is in both your Title tag and H1 Tag.

Both of these tags are key for your product pages if you want to rank on local searches, so make sure you include your location keyword.

Tell users where you are.

Your business name, address and phone number are vital if you are to be found by customers, yet it’s surprising how many businesses overlook this crucial detail. Make sure you include this information on your site and use the same information consistently across all your pages and any other sites you may run.

Local phone number.

If you’re going to give out a number on your site, make sure it’s a local one. Nothing kills the appeal of a local business more than a generic geographical number. Be proud of being local and keep your contact details local.

Pay attention to your Schema mark-up. Since the Google Hummingbird update and the greater dependency on Knowledge Graph, Schema mark-up is increasingly important. Google has gone on record stating that adding a Schema.org mark-up will tell its search engine your business is a local business. So ensure you add this geographic mark-up to your website.

Don’t forget Directory Listings.

Claim your citations on popular search engines and social media directories like Facebook, Google, Bing, Yelp, Yell and FourSquare amongst others. Also don’t forget to pay attention to the local directories that serve your local area.

High-quality backlinks.

Domain authority and kudos is important in local search: in fact the same rules apply as with traditional SEO. The more high-quality links your site can attract, the greater your domain authority will be and the greater your chances of ranking highly on the local search engines.

Don’t forget the backlinks from other relevant local sites either.

Many of these sites might not have the authority and gravitas of the sites mentioned above, but they remain crucial to local search engine ranking. If you think these sites play an important role in the local economy, then try to get a link.

Google+ Local Pages.

The importance of Google+ Local pages can’t be over-emphasised. So make sure you claim your page. Provide Google with as much information as possible and don’t forget to include opening times either.

Positive local reviews can have a beneficial effect and can be important in persuading potential customers to put new business your way. Good reviews can improve your local search engine ranking, particularly good reviews on Google+.

Don’t forget the mobile market.

Don’t overlook the importance of mobile. After all, local search and mobile go hand in hand. In fact, it’s worth remembering that 9 out 0f 10 smartphone searches result in action. So it’s important to ensure that your website is mobile-friendly and responsive.
