For a while now Twitter has been inserting promoted tweets into parts of its website.
This has been confined to areas of the website such as search results. However, on Monday Twitter announced that they have started to rollout promoted tweets – aka paid advertisements – directly into the user’s personal timeline.
Naturally Twitter is staking its claim that advertising enhances the lives of its users by suggesting that they “help even more people to discover interesting accounts, people and information they may otherwise have missed.” In truth, though, this is just the next step in Twitter’s work to turn its huge popularity into cash.
For companies that paid for promoted tweets that appeared in search results there was some success, adding these to the users own timeline can only improve the amount of traffic it generates.
